The story is told of two young lovers, Joke and Dare who went to church for service. Despite the fact that they were churchgoers, they were living together, though not married.
That Sunday, the preacher delivered a fiery sermon about heaven and hell and emphasized on God’s mercy for the repentant soul. The Holy Spirit tugged at Joke’s heart with conviction, “the soul that sinneth, it shall die”. Ezek. 18:4. The preacher voice thundered in agreement, “lady today may be your last chance”. Her heartbeat increased in pace under the heavy conviction of sin. The choir began singing solemnly the hymn, “I surrender all….” and she raised her hand in response to the altar call. Just then, Dare noticed the tears in her eyes and her upraised hand. He whispered into her ears, “Do you want to embarrass me? Drop your hand now. You can give your life to Jesus later not today.” She was being pulled by heaven and hell. In those few seconds, the battle raged on for her precious soul. Then, she made up her mind, “I’ll do it another day.” With her new resolve, she quietly dropped her hand and the service ended.
They boarded his car and took off but that was her last trip because they had a ghastly accident a few hours later in which she alone died. Dare survived with several injuries.
